The Void Archipelago

This is an unofficial W.I.P. Based this on a conversation I had on the server yesterday, and the idea of it really inspired me.

Humanity's stubborn habitation of any place with an atmosphere, clean water, and livable conditions has entertained the gods on many occasion. From those that live in the frozen and icy lands at the center of Aeria, to the harsh deserts of Sida, the gods shake their heads and wonder why they simply don't have the foresight to move to a more comfortable land. But, without a doubt, the one area that confounds them the most are the Void Islands, barely a part of Aeria, at all.

You see, despite the stability the gods give the world of Aeria, occasionally, sad events happen. Occasionally, the gods aren't even responsible for those bad events, either. In one such incident, a huge earthquake racked a small island nation on the edge of Aeria, causing its islands to - literally - float away in the current. Towards the edge of Aeria's dome, it slowly floated away, rocking in the currents. Of course, during this time, there were still people on this chunk of earth. Their houses were falling apart from their new islands movements in the ocean. Trees were falling... their entire world was shaking apart, lost in the current of the ocean.

And then, they began to fall off the edge of the world. Fortunately, the few tribal musicians on the island had prepared for this. Casting spells that wrenched the very life from their souls, they summoned massive iron chains, attaching their island to the Dome before it floated away into the void.

With that, the magicians barely alive from the strain, the island began to slowly float, held in place by the magical, massive, chain of iron. And the residents looked up and out and the spectacle of the stars and sun. To their back an everlasting waterfall flowed over the edge of the world, coating their island in a mystical rainbow. And inwardly, they asked themselves... how would they survive here, beyond the world's edge?

The answer, as it turns out, was quite simple. A well continued to give forth water, through some miracle of nature or magic. The water allowed the trees to grow thick and tall in the never ending daylight of the void. Fruit was laid out, planted in long rows, as they stubbornly struggled to exist in their islands' harsh conditions. A few animals had survived, and with care, they managed to breed enough. The first years on their own were tough. Attempts at sailing out to freedom were met with failure as the current snatched their ships away before they could sail for other shores.

As time passed by, they simply lived there, out of sight of the rest of the world, slowly developing their own small culture. Their skin became dark and brown from the harsh sun, the heat causing them to maintain their island lifestyle. They created their own gods, worshiping Blandine, God of the Void. Hashi, God of the Waterfall. They worshiped Dari, Goddess of the Game - the term they referred to their struggle against the odds as. None of these gods blessed them with miracles, or appearances, of course. But religion provided stability.

As time proceeded, the Archipelago slowly expanded, 'catching' falling pieces of land and attaching them with chains, slowly creating a group of islands that floated, chained to Aeria's edge and fanning outward into space like a bizarre spider. Sailors would go as close to the edge as they dared, the occasional one swearing that he saw a group of people, living on floating islands. With time, the Void Archipelago became a myth amongst sailors - floating islands that teemed with natural gold and riches, an idyllic lifestyle. A far cry from the game the Archipelago's residents faced every day.

But such is the way of legends. Never confirmed, never disproven, and always plated on dishes of hope.

Location and Topography

The Void Archipelago is not widely known, beyond legends about it. In reality, it's a series of islands on Aeria's north-western corner that simply float on the edge of the world, impossibly large chains keeping them attached to the mainland. The primary reason that it has never been confirmed is the fact that it's nearly impossible to reach, and even harder to leave. The only way to find it is to throw yourself off the edge of the world, and pray you're heading in the right direction, and leaving is only possible through magic. That said, there are a few traders who have made the journey, adventurers who risked their lives to come.

There's no map of the islands, and the reason for this is twofold. The first is that in the minds of the people, to map the Archipeglo would be tempting fate. Living on a rock that floats through the air has made them cautious, unwilling to tempt Fate into changing the formation of their islands. The second reason is related to that - the islands are regularly moving. While the original, enormous landmass is tethered to Aeria through physical chains, the other islands that make up the Archipelago are not secured, and regularly float around, bumping into each other. The weak gravity they each produce, coupled with magical runes that allow for transportation, means that they stay in the vicinity of each other, but it's not uncommon for the tribe of one island to move theirs, as politics change.

Culture

The interesting thing to note about this bizarre group of islands is the culture - their world is literally made up of everything that has fallen off the world. It's not uncommon to see a statue of Tyr being used as a table, while an invaluable rune is acts as a plate, daggers acting as knives. It's an absolute mix of cultures, combining everything from Occitan technology to runes from Talibarian wizards.

I haven't forgotten this. Updating it to fit with a map I'm working on - edit of gm_skylife.

Just in case any admins want to host an event there. Razz
