Because if we're RPing on Turmalis then we'll want the entire city. I'm not saying make it big enough to fit 8000 people in; that'd be silly.
Perhaps 4 or 5 times bigger than what Kali currently has.
It was just a suggestion, so if you don't want to do it, don't do it.

Yes, but you have to look at it from a feasibility point of view. The map is supposed to currently be HUGE, i.e. a fuckton of desert. You throw in a large city with interiors and such and you're going to start seeing framerate issues due to the limits of multiplayer optimisation.

ARES was greatly optimised due to the seperation of the spacebox and the ARES. And that was buggy enough. But with a city? You couldn't do it.

Stop looking at it from a roleplayers view and look at it from a mapper point of view. If you want a large city, you can have a large city, but you can't have a large detailed city + detailed desert + whatever the fuck else which negatively impacting your gameplay.

I never asked for a fucktonne of desert, and I never knew we were wanting a fucktonne of desert.
I knew we wanted SOME desert, but I figured the main focus would be on the important roleplay parts. IE, the city (Y'know, where pretty much ALL OF THE ROLEPLAY WILL BE TAKING PLACE), the caverns, and the fountain thingy that Jacker wants.

Stop being so difficult, I realise that making a large city would impact the FPS, but, for example, that freespace map has a gigantic city, and that doesn't lag at all.

That's because it's blocky and undetailed to fuck. Half of it is also func_detailed.

And Jacker wants a fuckton of desert. Thats the entire reason everyone is getting a vehicle.

Okay, but think about it like this.
If we're going to have to choose between a massive desert and a decent city, what do you think Jacker's going to choose?
A vast expanse of nothingness that people will spend as little time as possible in?
Or the central point of roleplay?

We aren't going to forsake a place to roleplay for a place to ride vehicles. We're a roleplay community.

Kali: freespace's city is the same size rougly as mine
Kali: each building is made of about 4 blocks and has no detail whatsoever

So much for needing a 'city'

I'd rather not do city roleplay, that's the reason I have the wide open desert. I like having somewhere to go besides the urban whatever.

Fuck Turmalis, we have no right to press Kali to do even more then what he is already doing when he's probably doing the most for this roleplay at the moment.

I'd hardly consider it city RP. I always imaged Turmalis as something similar to Mos Eisley.
But, I agree with you there. It's all Kali's decision.

No, other areas such as separate bases. The wide open feel also appeals to me in particular, sand dunes or not. It makes the world around you seem less claustrophobic and larger. Besides, how would this whole mining role play work if we are inside some giant city? I don't think the government of such a city would approve drilling under it.

All in all, I'd rather have a wide open area with different focal points of roleplay then one huge city where every faction is clusterfucking for some reason. Why would they be there anyway if not after some sort of resource?

I never said we should be confined to a city.
Why is everyone twisting my words? D:

I said maybe have the city 4 times bigger than what Kali's currently mapped, which is pretty damn small.
I also suggested we have it in a desert with the other focal points such as the fountain and caverns present.
I know this is kinda irrelevant but I don't like it when people say I've said things when I haven't.

Why can't we put a small section of Turmalis in some corner of the map and skybox the visible rest behind it? That way the desert and everything else in there will have more than enough space while leaving us a "safe zone" to passive and rest.

Makka, I think it'd just be easier for Kali if no city is included. Besides, what would be the point of having a larger city then what we have when the server's maximum capacity is only 25? Most likely larger roleplays will be focused around a single point in the town, such as a bar, with minor ones occurring elsewhere.

If there is no city at all, where would we go then? I kind of doubt people want to be on the move all the time or camp on a dune. There has to be some place to rest and passive, or player exhaustion could rear it's ugly head.

There'll be a town, just not turmalis. I'll possiby put turmalis in the skybox but it won't be reachable in the map.

That should work too. Since we can see it, it wouldn't be all that far away, so the characters whom are in Turmalis would reach the town we're in.

I believe the map is not done with buildings is it not?

I was going to say it was lacking fine details such as graffiti, garbage and possible your occasional signs of a fire fight.
