Visitors from Above
Author: Gregory Hobbs
Date: December 15th

Some of you may have notice a large, strange form in the skies yesterday, and may be surprised to find out that a ship docked overnight in Surna, but not along the river or even in the water. The strange shape in the air was, in fact, a new form of transport being developed by the Simmons Company. The "airship," as the company calls it, settled in at the very southern outskirts of Surna, and is presently guarded by a small force of privately owned militia. Curious, I and several of my colleagues went there this morning to investigate. Though we were not allowed to venture very far inside, Mr. Simmons himself allowed us to join him in his cabin. He politely informed us that there was little information he could release about the vessel beyond its name, the "Ascent." We were told it could house a full crew, along with passengers and cargo, and that the ship is capable of traveling faster than any water-based vessel, but were given no details.

Further inquiry behind the purpose of the "Ascent's" appearance today provided us with more clues. The Simmons Company has brought a new shipment of goods to be introduced in the Talibarian market, specifically Surna, to meet "new and growing needs." Mr. Simmons also expressed that he had business with the government here, and would be meeting with them soon. In addition, he has kindly asked us to inform the public not to approach the ship without good reason. "We deal in very valuable equipment, Mr. Hobbs," said Simmons, "and it's become second nature to assume someone is out to steal it. It's nothing personal, just our policy. But our policy is very strict and unforgiving. My guards have been instructed to assume the worst of anyone without official documents. That said, I'd rather avoid confrontations altogether, and I'd appreciate it if people would leave us be."

We asked about the nature of some of these new products. Mr. Simmons seemed pleased to answer, this time. "My company has been focusing on utilities, heavy industry, and lethal weaponry in the past. This time, we attempted to enter the domestic and agricultural market." Simmons went on to describe what he calls an "autonomous pump" designed to carry water across large lengthy pipes or flexible tubes of varying sizes. "The goal is to make it easier to get water where you need it as quickly and efficiently as possible, with the least amount of strain from you, the worker." Mr. Simmons noted that he had both large and small versions meant for public and private use, and he intends to speak with Governor Hook on the installation of these pumps throughout the city. "Water is essential to life. It keeps us and our forest alive. The more control we have over our water, the sooner we'll be able to recover, and the more resilient we'll be in the future."

When asked if his company had decided to stop or pause developing weapons, Mr. Simmons replied "Oh, not at all. We're fighters at heart, so it's only natural. But, given the movement toward becoming a more civilized society, I've decided to pursue some non-lethal weaponry for cheap, safe, and lawful self-defense." Simmons showed us a small assortment of non-lethal weapons from his company that would be hitting the shelves soon this month: a spray designed to irritate the eyes and cause intense physical pain without causing damage, this same concept in the form of an air-powered grenade, and an air-powered projectile weapon that launches a large, entangling net. They are called the "Pepper Spray," "Pepper Grenade," and "Net Gun." Before we parted ways, we asked Mr. Simmons if we could see the products in action before they were on sale, and he informed us that he would be doing public demonstrations the day before they entered the market.

As we left the Ascent, we felt that, despite the dark tides of war, there may yet be a bright future for Surna. As we returned to printing office to ready today's papers, we saw the Ascent's messengers leave for the city. Only time will tell if Mr. Simmons' products will forever change Surna. Until then, we shall wait with cautious, yet eager optimism.

OOC: More to come, including the possible addition of several new items.

Were there Aliens in Aeria, not that I'm saying there are, they would probably NOT expose themselves that easily, then engage in an interview with a reporter/journalist.

I'll be honest, I'm overjoyed at the notion of airships and ideas about related advances in the plot, but I think having pepper spray is an astoundingly stupid plan, it's another method of going '/me points this at you and you fall over in pain'.

There are other things like that, like say crossbows, but at least those and all others are very possible to defend against. Get even the smallest amount of pepper spray on your eyes and you won't feel fine.

You are overracting a bit. People from Aeria aren't gonna abuse it because they won't want to get banned unless they are a troll, in which case it wouldn't matter if they were banned.
Some random person joining won't know we have pepperspray, either.
Even if someone happened to abuse it, anyway, anyone affected would fucking rat them out until something was done about it, anyway.

You don't have to abuse it for it to be poor rp. Claiming I'm overreacting doesn't do anything to nullify my point, either.

Either way, I don't want this thread ending up like every war-related news post, so I'd rather argue over SF.

Question: If the gnomes, not the sucky ones like Noddy, but the ones who actually do use enchantments and technology, why would they be beat by a human company? Since some gnomes are known to make mechanical limbs.

And they're known for experimenting with flying machines aswell.

Gnome culture isn't adept to technology and enchanting in Aeria, at least they aren't according to most recent lore.

They're more like a breed of inbred dwarves now, who, big surprise, aren't the stereotyped hardy, beer drinking proud race of blacksmiths.

Anything to avoid the dumb as hell tropes for fantasy fiction.

At this point, Goblins are more socially and technologically advanced than gnomes lorewise.

Hence my Whittle article underlining this.

Slandering a whole race doesn't tend to work unless they're all retarded and everyone knows it.
